Fellow Queens!
There is nothing like the smell of dust in the morning! Serious dust.
Every male loves explosions. Literally or figuratively, blowing something up is a top ten activity. So last Sunday when it came time to implode the Holiday Inn on Central and Royal I knew we couldn't miss it. With two extra boys in tow we sped up Central to Royal, hooked a left onto the west access road and found a space among the masses to park. Being the cool mom that I am, I boosted all 5 of them to the roof of the mini van thankful for the luggage rack up there that would hopefully keep them from falling off the van and onto their heads.
The buzz of testosterone was palpable as cameras were adjusted and stories from the last implosion of a building off Central two years ago were traded (yes we were at that one too) Just before 8 am three long warning alarms were sounded. Those alone were so loud that I thought about the possibly sleeping, uninformed apartment dwellers nearby. That wake up call may be second only to having a toddler in your face screaming for waffles at 4 am.
Before the building actually falls you hear the booms of the dynamite on each floor being detonated. BANG, BANG, BANG....then wait for it, wait for it, the whole thing comes down. Ooh ahh! The boys cheer and men wipe away tears at the majesty of it all.
But then, unlike the last time, the huge dust cloud gets caught by the wind and blows across the highway right to us. Pandemonium breaks out and the crowds run to their cars. We are covered in ash (and probably asbestos) as we scramble off the car and into it. A layer of dust covers the doors and dashboard as we then proceed to the nearest car wash. The boys vacuum out Stanley the minivan while I supervise. After all, isn't that why we had kids; so they could pump gas and set up all the electronics in the house?
It was such a great time, aside from the dust, and make sure you don't miss the next one. Here is the link to the video from channel 8 http://www.wfaa.com/sharedcontent/dws/bus/stories/110808dnmetholidayinn.18d5b3a73.html so gather round and crank up the sound.
Reign On!
